Welcome

Welcome to the Halstead Town Council Website

Halstead lies seven miles north of Braintree and is an attractive traditional market town with a wealth of shops, restaurants and interesting walks.

With a population of over 11,000, Halstead has grown steadily and it has several estates of modern houses as well as the expected amenities of 21st century life. Schools are of a high standard and local health facilities include a hospital and medical centre. Leisure opportunites, too are of a high standard with most sports catered for. There are several playing fields and a leisure centre and swimming pool. Clubs and organisations for all ages and interests can be found and the town's community spirit is typified by the Empire, a popular local theatre used for weekly bingo and live shows.

Halstead has a wide variety of individual shops and a market held on Fridays and Saturdays, and is a friendly place to visit.

The Town Council has a responsibility to cater for the needs of the growing population and younger generation, but also to balance these demands and preserve what is best for everyone, whether it be buildings, open spaces or leisure facilities

The Halstead Heritage Musuem is situated at Mill House and is open on Wednesday and Sunday from 1.30pm to 4.00pm from February to November

Town Council opening hours are 9.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday

Service 88 Quality Bus Partnership

Service 88 Quality Bus Partnership

88bus

Bus users in north Essex now benefit from a new partnership allowing tickets issued on the 88 services from different companies to be used on buses along any of the number 88 routes.

Each operator accepts day returns, weekly, monthly and annual tickets from Hedingham Buses and First Essex buses on the 88 bus route between Great Yeldham and Colchester.

The key advantages include:

  • Ticket inter-availability – customers can buy a return ticket or pass from one operator and use it to return on another operator’s bus
  • More flexibility in journeys thanks to better aligned schedules and routing
  • Improved vehicle standards and accessibility
  • Bus stop infrastructure improvements at key stops
